FMCSA Cracks Down On Fraudulent Brokers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced a nationwide enforcement initiative called "Operation Protect Your Move" on May 20, 2024.

This initiative targets interstate household goods (HHG) movers and brokers with a history of non-compliance with federal safety and consumer protection regulations.

The FMCSA conducted similar enforcement actions in 2023, focusing on moving companies in the spring and brokers in Nevada, New York/New Jersey, and Florida later in the year.

These actions identified over 1,000 violations of FMCSA regulations. The FMCSA responded by issuing enforcement actions, including letters of violation and revocation of operating authority for some companies. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a civil penalty case based on the 2023 operations.

Operation Protect Your Move will target movers and brokers with the highest numbers of consumer complaints. The FMCSA will continue to refer criminal violations to the DOJ for prosecution, if applicable.
