U.S. box demand has historically been weak, and this trend continues with recent surprises to the downside. This is concerning as box demand serves as a reliable leading economic indicator, reflecting the state of the goods economy. Packaging Corp. of America, the third-largest North American containerboard and box producer, reported a severe 9.8% box shipment decline in Q2.
