I-15 Shut Down After Semi Over-Turns

Interstate 15 was brought to a standstill near the Nevada-California border on July 26th following a truck fire involving lithium-ion batteries. The incident occurred on the northbound lanes between Barstow and Baker, California.

A semi-truck overturned, causing its load of lithium-ion batteries to ignite. Fire crews responded to the scene, warning of the potential for "thermal runaway" – a rapid escalation of fire in lithium-ion batteries requiring substantial water to extinguish.

Due to the hazardous conditions posed by the fire, authorities closed Interstate 15 in both directions between Afton Canyon and Basin roads.

The closure was implemented to ensure public safety and allow emergency responders to effectively manage the situation. Officials warned drivers to avoid relying on GPS systems, as they might direct them onto unsuitable dirt roads.

The subsequent fire and hazardous materials situation caused a significant traffic backup on the major roadway connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
