Hauling FEMA loads has evolved significantly over the years, especially regarding sourcing and management strategies. With a growing emphasis on Power Only loads, many owner-operators are collaborating closely with brokerages.
Traditionally, FEMA freight appearing on spot markets or public load boards consists of overflow shipments that regular carriers and brokers do not cover with their dedicated partners.
In today’s loose freight market—characterized by more capacity than available loads—FEMA shipments are often picked up by regular carriers and fleets. This trend leaves fewer opportunities for spot market carriers, making it increasingly challenging for them to secure FEMA-related loads.
Adam Wingfield, Founder of Innovative Logistics, shared insights on the dynamics affecting the availability of FEMA freight. He noted, "The process for becoming a FEMA-approved carrier starts with registering as a Transportation Service Provider (TSP) during their registration period in the prior year. If a carrier wants to move FEMA freight in 2024, they would have had to become approved last year. With 2025 registration opening soon, I encourage carriers who want to be called upon during times of need to register."
For carriers and brokers interested in hauling FEMA loads, the registration process is essential. They should prepare to register on the TSP site soon and conduct thorough research, as insurance requirements differ from standard freight.
Once approved, carriers and brokers will gain access to listings detailing available FEMA loads, enhancing their opportunities in this vital service area.
