The number of active freight brokerages in the United States has declined in 2024. As of Q3, there are 26,653 active brokerages, which is a decrease of 11.6% compared to 2023.
This decline has accelerated throughout the year, starting at 7.8% in January and reaching double digits by April. Compared to May 2024, there are 288 fewer active brokerages. While there has been a decrease over the past two years (12.4%), the number of active brokerages remains slightly higher than three years ago (1.4%).
Looking at a longer timeframe, the number of active brokerages has grown significantly over the past four and five years, at 22.5% and 27.8% respectively.
