The latest reports on cargo theft are on the rise nationwide. With incidents spiking 59% compared to last year in the third quarter, the freight security experts aren't foreseeing a slowdown in 2024. It's crucial for fleets to stay in the know and gear up because, let's face it, none of us want to end up as a statistic.

There's been a concerning trend lately—strategic theft has been soaring. These crafty criminals are posing as legit carriers to swipe cargo.

Worst States For Theft

In the second quarter of 2023, California retained its lead as the state with the highest incidence of cargo theft, accounting for 58% of the total.

Georgia ranked second with 12% of total thefts, experiencing a 33% increase in cargo theft volume compared to the previous period.

Texas dropped to third place with a nine-percentage-point decrease from Q1-2023, with Building & Industrial (38%) being the primary target for cargo thieves.

Mapping fraud

Analyzing the country by dividing it into quadrants, as depicted in the accompanying map, revealed that 63% of documented cargo thefts took place in Quadrant 3 (C3), where the primary cargo theft hotspot is situated in southern California.

In simpler terms, the prevalence of cargo theft in the third quadrant was 151% higher than the average, mirroring trends observed in Q1-2023. Quadrant 4 (C4) registered the second-highest concentration of cargo theft incidents for the quarter, accounting for 28%, with Atlanta identified as the highest risk area in this quadrant.
